But beyond commercial outreach, Heartthrob is the work of musicians interested in explaining, with lyrical precision arriving in billowing choruses, the small moments that make affairs of the heart both so specific and so universal. Initial sales have been larger than those of any previous Tegan and Sara album, and they're touring in larger arenas as an opening act for the Grammy-winning band fun. If Tegan and Sara wanted to expand their audience with a pop album, they certainly seem to have succeeded. I'm glad we live in a time when the idea of putting a glossy pop sheen on one's singer-songwriter pensées doesn't lead to accusations of "selling out." Don't let your ears slip-slide over the surface of these tunes, because this is music that is often loaded with a carefully articulated sense of doubt or hopelessness that Tegan and Sara suggest needs to be shaken off, through a triumph of the pop-music will. But the material on Heartthrob is very much a collaboration of sounds and sensibilities, and these women are united in expressing the joys and the agony - the often luxurious, languid agony - that anyone who has been in love can identify with. In the past, it was frequently possible to distinguish between the songs each wrote - Tegan's were often tempestuous and fulsome, Sara's more poppy. It celebrates a one-on-one intimacy that extends to the way this duo is reaching out to what it hopes will be a larger audience.Īs openly gay women who've never made their sexuality or their sexual politics the subject of their material, Tegan and Sara have always created romantic music about falling in love and living through relationships both good and bad. And these sisters truly are and if you see this longplayer as the enjoyable pop record it is you might understand it. It might be an evolution not every fan would follow but you have to admit one thing – if you’re trying to write a good pop song, you actually have to be a good songwriter. Of course, if you’re expecting a edgy and deep indie-album, Heartthrob couldn’t be farer away from that.
TEGAN AND SARA playing and living these songs with a consequence that is just too addictive to not enjoy at least a bit. You could moan about that and argument with the typical ‘sell out’ phrase or you could just embrace the bands bravery. More sound, more production, more mainstream accessable pop – that is what Heartthrob is about. And even when I Was A Fool slows a bit down it’s still completely overdosed – and it might even rip a bit off ROXETTE’s evergreen Listen To Your Heart. TEGAN AND SARA got them all at one place – opener and first single Closer already disarms you with it’s catchy hook and beat, the following Goodybe, Goodybe is not less energetic. These ten songs are basicly songs which KATY PERRY or CARLY RAE JEPSON would kill for to have at least one of them on their album. TEGAN AND SARA present pop to its purest – melody-driven, shallow, a bit naive and heavily candied with sweetness. This record is probably as indie as DAVID GUETTA (with whom the girls recently worked too) makes intelligent and complex electronic music. Although the duo has always been quite open to pop compositions and are heavily influenced by intelligent mainstream music of the 80s and 90s, it’s never been as obvious as on Heratthrob.
